What is baptism?

Baptism is an act of immersion in water for a believer: a public declaration of the salvation they have received through Jesus. It is an identification with Christ in His death and resurrection represented by our death to our old life of sin and our resurrection into a new life with Jesus. We baptise because it is an act of obedience to Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19. Jesus Himself was also baptised (Mark 1:9) as an example for us to follow.

At SCC, while we acknowledge the meaningfulness of infant baptism undertaken by other churches, we practice a policy of only baptising people who are old enough to have made a conscious decision to follow Christ.

Baptism is an example set by Christ:

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptised by John in the Jordan. Mark 1:9

Baptism is a public declaration:

So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, Matthew 10:32

Baptism is an act of obedience:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19

Baptism is an identification with Christ in His death and resurrection

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. Romans 6:3-5
