Thank you for taking time to consider a commitment to membership at Southport Church of Christ. We recognise that membership into the world-wide body of Christ is gained when personal faith is exercised in receiving Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. However, there is also a part we can play in committing to the membership of a local church. Download our membership booklet which outlines our mission, vision, values and beliefs along with the concept and responsibilities of formal church membership.
Membership is a formal and voluntary commitment to a local church. To become a member of SCC is to identify with our vision and commit to not just attending our church, but actively engaging in, contributing to and serving with SCC in line with our mission.
A member of SCC is someone who has been attending long enough to determine if SCC is a Christian community that they want to be part of and journey with as they serve God. Those who attend are encouraged to become members.
We trust that the Holy Spirit will guide us as a church to make decisions in tune with the heart of God. Therefore, it is only those who are followers of Jesus who are able to have voting rights. Those who apply to become a member are not required to provide proof of past membership or to wait for a certain period of time before applying; their testimony that they are a follower of Jesus is sufficient. As Christ commanded His disciples to make more disciples and to baptise them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we also require members to have been baptised by immersion as believers, in obedience to the command of Christ*.
*SCC is a diverse community with people coming into membership from a wide range of Church traditions. Not all churches baptise by immersion, if you’ve come to SCC from a different mode of baptism, we are more than happy to talk that through as a part of your membership process.
Being a member gives a person the privilege to: vote at meetings of SCC (for members over 18 years); have the right to serve in a leadership capacity in ministries of SCC.
Members have the responsibility to: attend church services on a regular basis; attend members meetings of SCC, and prayerfully consider motions to be voted upon prior to voting; pray for and financially contribute to SCC; identify your spiritual gifts and be willing to serve within the mission and ministries of SCC; encourage and be an ambassador for SCC.
We’re excited about your decision to commit to Southport Church of Christ through membership. Fill out the application form to get started. Make sure you have read out membership information booklet.
